Fwd: Mark, see you in London this year?

2021 has arrived and I hope this message finds you well and in good spirits.

The Uxbridge Folk Club in Hillingdon (West London), England has invited me to perform for their online concert series!  The very first solo show I did in the UK was at this club, so it holds a special place in my heart.  I will probably focus on some of my songs that have a connection to the British Isles in one way or another, and the show time should be convenient for my British and European friends (8pm London time, and 9pm on the Continent).  As usual, the concert is free to watch on YouTube Live, but donations are very welcome!  If you sign in to YouTube you can participate in the chat.

Hope to "see" you there,
Dave

Highly recommended movie on the environment, as per John H

I have not yet watch this movie, but it is on my list due to John H's suggestion.

Michael Moore has produced a new movie, Planet of Humans, about the environmental movement now streamed on YouTube.  One in which he (thankfully) does not appear.  It is exceptional – well worth the hour and forty minutes it runs and do watch all of the credits as they contain additional information.

I apologize if you are receiving this for the second (or even third) time as I received it from two different sources.

Comeback

The Comeback page: http://www.cneonline.org/comeback-series/.

Article on Linked In from Jerry Bowyer sent me to the trailer. Insights from the Jack Kemp approach.

Forbes.com: "'Comeback' Miniseries Aims To Reboot The Jack Kemp Agenda"

The man who mentored Jack Kemp as an anti-poverty crusader has teamed up with the man whom Jack Kemp mentored into politics to produce a mini-series called Comeback. Robert Woodson and Paul Ryan produced Comeback and used it to take viewers into the toughest neighborhoods in America, and show them groups of people who are solving the social ills of the inner city poor from within and below. Comeback shines the light on the people that Woodson calls “community antibodies.” Community antibodies are the neighborhoods’ organic defense against threats such as violence, addiction, and social break-down. Comeback is not really much of a public policy series, and even less of a politics series. But I think it leads the sensitive viewer to some pretty clear policy and political conclusions: that the welfare state has failed, that the people who know the most about these communities learned what they know by growing up in them (not by studying monographs in grad school), that government has made things worse, that to the degree that government can play a constructive role, it is to empower the local community leaders (not shills, pols, and grievance merchants, or activists) to have more degrees of freedom in what they are already doing, helping people escape misery one at a time from the inside out...

Bashing the guy on day 2

Yesterday, on election day, Kevin Acklin, I, went to the Allegheny County Election Department. He passed the papers necessary to get onto the ballot for the mayor's race in November 2009 as an Independent.

Today, the bashing has begun.

Folks, we don't need perfect.

Folks. Don't put him in a box either.

This song, "Don't Put Me In a Box" -- by Johnsmith, recorded at our house concert, fits for Kevin too.

Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones now a role model for young swimmers - ESPN

Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones now a role model for young swimmers - ESPN It is all, inevitably, about the 'briefs.' Jones is endorsement-savvy now, and he can't utter the S-word because he has a deal with Nike. Today, he is speaker-circuit cool. As a kid growing up in New Jersey, he took barbs for competing in a sport with skimpy trunks.

Swimmers less intense away from Olympics - Columbia Missourian

Swimmers less intense away from Olympics - Columbia Missourian “Well right now, I’m kind of fulfilling obligations to sponsors,” said two-time U.S. Olympian Mark Gangloff at Saturday's competition at the Missouri Grand Prix at the MU Student Recreation Complex.
Gangloff said those commitments include putting on swim clinics and giving talks at schools. The popularity that swimming received at the 2008 Olympic Games has allowed him to go into schools and deliver positive speeches and be a role model for children.
But other than speeches and swim clinics, Gangloff and his fellow Olympians said non-Olympic years consist mostly of training, just a little more relaxed than what they have to do to prepare for the Olympics.
